In a series of drawings and sketches created in recent years, the artist returns to questions posed many times, several or even several dozen years ago, questions that still seem important, although due to the passage of time they have to be formulated slightly differently. Twelve large-format, monochromatic drawings maintained in a uniform, modernist convention differ in their formal solutions. By denying them any justification, Kozłowski leaves the audience open to interpretation. He asks about the role of perception and imagination. To what extent can purely formal accounts change the way we perceive these works? Will the lack of commentary make us read them differently?
Games with the viewer are among the privileged methods in Kozłowski’s artistic activities, and the stakes of these games are their rules, the pursuit of rules, and the negotiation of language. Since the 1970s, the artist has been demonstrating the impossibility of finding the truth, the relativity of norms and criteria within which a given colour was “neither beautiful nor ugly”, and a rose was and was not a rose.
Conceptualism, which involved philosophy, was for him a school of artistic radicalisation, and analytical investigations took on an increasingly critical dimension. Even though his criticism is formulated in philosophical rather than political terms, both politics and aesthetics remain for him a spectacle in which he does not want to participate.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a performance from the Continuum series. Drawing activities initiated by the artist in 1978 were carried out in the following decades, among others: in Poznań, Hamburg, Montreal, Edmonton, London, Sydney, Oxford, The Hague, Oslo, Poznań, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Brno, Toulouse, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest, Copenhagen, Moscow. Continuum XXIX in 2009 took place at the Profile Foundation. In turn, Continuum XL will be, as the artist announces, the last performance from this series of drawing activities
