KRZYSZTOF WODICZKO
A PASSAGE

1972

Współczesna Gallery, Warsaw
A spatial installation in the form of a long (20 m) and narrow (1.7 m) double corridor,
closed at both ends with slanted mirrors

The passage makes it impossible to observe anything except the beholder himself.
Contrary to the ordinary mirror refl ection, the right is on the right and left is on
the left.
The passage is designed for one person only.
The beholder always sees his back; being in motion, he follows his own image.
The beholder, from wherever he looks, always sees himself from the same
distance, i.e., from 42 meters.
The passage is based on a purely optical effect.
