RYSZARD WAŚKO
FROM A TO B AND BACK TO A

From A to B and back to A, 1974, 7’25”, 35 mm

The film is an example of an analysis of the role of sound in creating film images by disrupting the synchronicity of sound and visual recording. In this performance film, the artist separates the voice from the image while covering the 200-meter distance from A to B and on the way back from B to A. The space between the two points has been divided into 25-meter-long sections. The artist, equipped with a sound recorder, counted aloud successive, passed sections, while moving away from the camera. After several dozen meters, it was already beyond the range of the camera lens. Regardless of whether his character was seen up close or at a distance, or even disappeared from sight, his voice describing the successive stages of the traveled space in numbers was kept at the same level all the time. As a result, the sound recording seems to “stand out” from the visual recording.
