The fourth in the series catalog accompanying a cyclic presentation program the most significant private collections of contemporary and modern art. Realized under the slogan “Dormant capital” by the Profile Foundation and the Palace Museum in Wilanów.
The history of this collection goes back to the beginning of the 60’s and the first museum studies of Robakowski where he wrote: they where told us – we need to make a “bookcase”. The collection which also includes a collection of interwar art, the fascinations of the avant-garde and the search for references to one’s own artistic practice are reflected in that time. Collecting included in the artistic strategy was for Robakowski the way of constructing his own traditions. In the following decades, it became a kind of activity, a kind of artistic project in which the economy of values was replaced by the economy of exchange.
In 1978, Robakowski and Małgorzata Potocka founded the Exchange Gallery which has become one of the key places of the artistic alternative. The gallery with a collection of art, video library, collections of various publications, unique prints and video documentation has been and still serves as a private archive. For Robakowski it was and is communication in disputes with narratives of the “official”, organizational history of art.
Publication is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland and by the Capital City of Warsaw.
