Post-retreat exhibition, students of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts’ Faculty of Conservation and Restoration
The exhibition presents the effects of the most recent in a series of six annual creative retreats in Karwieńskie Błota. The underlying idea of the programme of the successive retreats was informed by the rich legacy of Dutch/German settlement in the area, dating back to the 16th century, and the present-day residents’ connectedness with local traditions. The theme of the 2013 retreat was ‘microcosm’, understood as the immediate surroundings, the world ‘at hand’s reach’. The participants searched for motifs characteristic for the locality, reflecting its unique as well as common features. They put themselves in the role of observers but also active agents in the process of shaping the place’s image and co-users of its space.
The exhibition at the Profile Foundation in Warsaw presents video and photographic documentation of the retreat as well as works referring to the students’ actions at Karwieńskie Błota in 2013. Documentation of the performance Need Some Encouragement is also featured. Inspired by a series of lectures on art in public space, among other topics, delivered by the retreat’s special guest, Bożena Czubak, the performance was carried out by the retreat’s participants.
The 2013 Karwieńskie Błota retreat was the last, sixth instalment in a programme of annual retreats designed by Grzegorz Stachańczyk for the students of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts’ Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art. Their underlying theme was the idea of recognising the identity of the particular locality: a seaside village, usually thought of in terms of anonymous tourism.
