STUMBLES OF TIME Alicja Karska & Aleksandra Went

02.04-07.06.2009

In their latest “stumbles of time”. “The City-Project” features cities melting down, “modernist „architecture of thawing sugar. Against the utopian pretence to being durable and eternal, these staged cities bring the image of destruction and falling apart. The rationalism of urban planning stumbles in mud and paddles, while the dilapidating geometry of white cubes makes even the Vitruvian principle of durability fail. The models of imagined cities are metamorphosing into the abandoned ruins of never-realised projects before our eyes.

Similar to their earlier works, Alicja Karska and Aleksandra Went take the photographs of “lousy objects and spaces” – old-fashioned, neglected, removed from circulation and, seemingly, deprived of significance. These photographs are entitled “From the Cycle” and look like reproductions from a book which has never existed, the motif of a building mesh recurring on its pages. The first photographs feature an old, dilapidated building, covered with metal lath, while in subsequent photographs and close-ups the artists concentrate on the mesh itself. The mesh fills the entire frame, creating a touching visual narration of the sheets/photographs of the unwritten history.

The action of the film “Hunt” develops in a frame stilled in time, opening to another frame looped in time. In the location full of hunting trophies, we watch a scene of “hunting” … for balloons floating on the screen in the film projection.
