Poppy Street, 1981

Pictures taken during the so-called hunger march on ul. Piotrkowska in Łódź in 1981. The artist decided that photography alone cannot reflect the extraordinary experiences that accompanied the largest street demonstration in the times of the Polish People’s Republic. To emphasize the emotions of the time, he painted red the faces of the crowd of demonstrating figures.

Poppy Checkpoint Charlie, 1989

Pictures taken on the morning of November 10, 1989, shortly after the wall was opened, shows crowds of Berliners lining up at the famous border crossing. In black and white photographs, the artist used a method that he first used in 1981 to convey the emotions accompanying the photographed scenes, and he painted people’s faces with red spots.
