JÓZEF ROBAKOWSKI
THE IDLE LINE

In this non-camera work, Robakowski used mechanically prepared film stock with a hand-drawn line. The image of the lazily winding line is occasionally enlivened by flashes of light originating from the projector. The latter, built by the artist himself, runs without a stepping motor, allowing for smooth film transport. Operating like a cinematograph, the installation is accompanied by a jarring violin sound reminiscent of a creaking mechanism. The strong audiovisuals were meant to impact on the viewer as ‘psychophysical phenomena’, in keeping with the artist’s concept of art as energy.

That same year, Robakowski made another film, Energetic Angles, where he scratched a continuous zig-zagging line directly on a film negative, producing a lightning-flash effect when screened.
