Born in 1943 in Warsaw, lives and works in New York, Boston and Warsaw. A multimedia artist, art theoretician and university professor. Currently he is a professor of the Art, Design and the Public Domain at Harvard University, Cambridge. He also teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1968, he graduated from the Faculty of Industrial Design, Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1970, he was appointed lecturer at the Warsaw Academy’s Faculty of Interior Design. He worked as an industrial designer, first (1968–1970) for the Unitra electronics conglomerate, then (1970–1977) for the PZO optical works in Warsaw. From 1968, he pursued interdisciplinary, experimental projects, such as sound performances with the composer and pianist Szábolcs Esztényi, as well as collaborating with the Polish Radio Experimental Studio. He initially presented his visual art at the Współczesna Gallery in Warsaw, then at the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw and the Akumulatory 2 Gallery in Poznań. In the 1970s, Wodiczko worked on the designs of ‘Vehicles’ referring to Poland’s socio-political reality at the time. In the second half of the 1970s, he started working with image projections in which be highlighted the ideological aspect of representation. Successive versions of those projects were developed following his relocation from Poland, first to Toronto (1970), then to Halifax (1978), Canada. In 1980 in Toronto, Wodiczko staged his first public projections. In 1986, he moved to New York City and worked on devices and vehicles designed for immigrants, veterans, the homeless and alienated: ‘Homeless Vehicle’ (1988–1989), ‘Poliscar’ (1991), ‘Alien Staff’ (1992), ‘Porte-Parole’ (1993), ‘Aegis’ (1998), ‘Dis-Armor’ (1999), or ‘War Veteran Vehicle’ (2008).
Since 1980, he has carried out over 90 projections in several dozen countries on different continents. Using transparencies and video streams, shown in galleries and museum spaces or projected on building walls and public monuments, charged with political and social meanings, the projections dealt with the issues of human rights, democracy, violence and alienation. Starting with ‘Town Hall Tower Projection’ (Kraków, 1996), the artist began animating city monuments and public buildings with images and voices of the projections’ participants. Krzysztof Wodiczko’s projects, the ‘Vehicles’ and ‘Instruments’ series and projections, reflect his critical-utopian strategy.
