Gambols, 1963–1965, collage on paper, various dimensions
The starting point for the series of 21 collages created between 2001 and 2011 was the 1964 work Manikin ‘K’ — Figure-head. The artist reproduced the silhouette of a black-handed figure cut out of floral wallpaper in Burlesques in various poses and configurations. Friese-like compositions with rows of figures with simplified shapes are full of humorous references to art history, literature, or everyday events.
